Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are your prices?
A: My prices depend on the complexity and nature of your event, how much preparation is required, so please call me at (858) 922-7639 to discuss pricing. If you have a small or personal event, please ask me about my family specials or a cash discount. I need to charge extra for special requests and to travel outside San Diego.
Q: What type of music do you play?
A: I am happy to play a variety of jazz, blues, funk, rock music, Latin, or pop music. Many times people want mellow background music to just add a little something to their event. But occasionally people want dance music. I have done it all, and I’m happy to work with you to create your ideal event.
Q: Do you play covers or original music?
A: I mostly play cover songs, as those get the best response. People often remark how they loved the variety that I play. But I have a few originals, and I can always improvise instead of sticking to the cover tune, making it sound original. My solos are always improvised, so in that sense I play original music on every song.
Q: Which artists do you cover?
A: Bruno Mars, Adele, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Lady Gaga, Bill Whithers, Van Morrison, Billy Joel, Sade, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Prince Royce, John Legend, Grover Washington, Candy Dulfer, Richard Elliot, Euge Groove, Coldplay, Daft Punk, Prince, Dido, Wild Cherry, War, The Meters, Otis Redding, Earth Wind & Fire, Blondie, Pharrell Williams, Sam Cooke, The Script, Sam Smith, Santana, The Commodores, Paul Simon, Michael Buble, Herbie Hancock, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Horace Silver, U2, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Antonio-Carlos Jobim, George Gershwin, Tito Puente, Bob Marley, Poncho Sanchez, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie, and I’m always adding new artists to my repertoire. See my blog for the complete “Song List.” If you have specific music or artists you would like, please reach out and see what I can do for you!
Q: Do you provide sound equipment?
A: I have a large amplifier to use in large spaces, as well as a wireless bluetooth speaker for beach shows or other fun but remote locations. I have a wireless microphone if you need the sax louder than it is on its own. The sax is quite versatile; I can play quietly or loudly, mellow or upbeat.
Q: What if we’re planning a surprise and you’re late? Will we get our money back?
A: Of course, but I am never late. I would give back your payment 100% if something prevents me from coming, like illness or a car accident. Luckily that hasn’t happened, but I would call you immediately and look for alternatives. People say that I’m a clear, honest communicator, so you can rest assured that I will be there on time and let you know of any changes. No surprises.
Q: How long can you play for?
A: I play solo shows for up to 3 hours. It’s more demanding than when I play in bands; when I play solo shows, I play the whole time. I usually play 60 minutes then then take a 15 minute break.
Q: How much experience do you have?
A: I have played thousands of shows, in large venues and small intimate settings. I have played saxophone since age 9! I will ask you your expectations and make sure I add even more than you’re expecting! I can read the crowd and adjust on the fly to your needs. I am flexible and understanding.
Q: What kinds of events should I hire you for?
A: Live saxophone music livens up any party. It adds a flavor of jazz and excitement. The parties I get hired most for are wedding ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, wedding receptions, corporate events, birthday parties, fundraisers, dinner parties, cocktail receptions, and galas. I have also played bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, anniversaries, barbecues, and quinceaneras.
Q: Se habla espanol? Do you speak Spanish?
A: Si! He estudiado en Espana durante un ano, asi que hablo espanol. Estoy contento a servir los clientes mexicanos o otros que hablan espanol. Pero, por favor que me hablen despacio! Ja ja. Yes, I know some Spanish as well as Italian, enough to arrange a saxophone event with you.
Q: Do you require water or food?
A: No, I can take care of that. Normally my shows are only 90 minutes, so I just come prepared, ready to play the whole time. If you hire me for 3 hours, I can bring my own snacks and water. Of course, if you wish to offer me food or water at your event, just let me know ahead of time.
Q: Why should I hire you over other saxophonists?
A: Besides playing my saxophone well, I interact with the crowd, putting on a visual show. People say I have the ideal sound, and the ideal look. I think it’s because I just love people, adding to the fun, and giving folks a unique experience, something they will long remember. People always tell me that I helped them make memories. I have a wireless mic so that I can play in different spots, move to the music (I used to be a professional dancer), and play in the crowd if you so desire. Of course I also have other intangibles, like friendliness, communication, flexibility, attentiveness, reliability, thoughtfulness, and professionalism.
Q: I don’t have specifics yet, but I’m thinking of hiring a saxophonist. Should I contact you now or do I need to wait until I get all the party specifics down?
A: I’d suggest contacting me now. If you have a tentative date, I can get it on my calendar. I can also help you figure out the best use of live music, placement, and creative ideas to enhance your event.
Q: If I want to discuss booking you for my event, what’s the next step?
A: Please call or text me at (858) 922-7639 and I can quickly get back to you with my availability and ideas to make your event a success!
